Then Came Joy
Pre-Sale Announcement
Early Response:
“I chewed off all of my finger nails even though I knew what was going to happen.”
“The story telling was 😙🤌” (Chef’s Kiss for those of you—like me—who don’t know the lingo and had to look it up).
“Profound and deep, but also comical at times, this is a gritty memoir about joy in all its facets.”
“I only planned to read one chapter and ended up reading straight through.”
Some stories are hard to put down even when you already know how they end.
Jodi Cowles grew up acquainted with grief — and with a faith full of contradictions she wasn’t allowed to question. She found her escape in purpose: documenting the work of global organizations serving the world’s most marginalized people, pouring herself into others’ suffering so she wouldn’t have to look at her own.
It almost worked.
Across dangerous assignments in forgotten corners of the world, the walls she’d built around her heart begin to crack — and everything she’d locked away comes flooding back. What follows is a reckoning: with her past, with her faith, with her own capacity to love and be loved.
And then, in a foreign country tangled in corruption and heartbreak and bureaucratic chaos, comes Joy.
Then Came Joy is a memoir of a life lived at full intensity — layered, funny, and at times almost unbearably tense. For anyone who has ever held faith and doubt in the same hand, or loved someone in circumstances stacked against them, this is your story too.
Note: if you buy during pre-sale, you’ll get a second copy to give away. Purchase your copy here. Books will be mailed on or about June 12.

I highly recommend the memoir of my amazing friend Jodi Cowles, and the story of the adoption of their daughter in Turkey. It’s a multi-layered story of very hard things and amazing miracles. I walked through much of it with them from a distance, even knew how it ended and yet I felt all the emotions as she tells the story. It’s a God story!!
